Top 15 Rom Coms

My Top 15 List of Rom Coms

Moviegoers “likes” and “dislikes” are very diverse and the romantic comedy genre tends to run the gamut of silly to sublime – as well as everything in between. I like the way “Rom Coms” let us suspend reality for a while and enjoy silly predicaments and quirky characters. Never (well ok, hardly ever) in real life would you meet characters as crazy or see situations that are as implausible, but I love to see all the wrongs righted and everyone well on their way to happiness by the end of the film!

Disclaimer: these are just my opinions. I am aware that some of these movies have been criticized as being formulaic (that’s Hollywood, lol!) and/or encouraging bad behavior. So let me assure you that I simply thought the films were funny, I do not approve of all the behaviors of the characters. I would probably be annoyed with a persistent admirer in real life, neither would I model myself after people who hire a fake fiancé, or lie about themselves at an online dating site.

Also, these are not artistic films and there is not a lot of deep meaning in them. They just made me laugh.

That is all.

Movie List Rom Coms

Here is the List:

  1. The Right Kind of Wrong – 2013 – rated R, stars Ryan Kwanten and Sara Canning – Leo, is a failed writer and dishwasher whose ex-wife writes a popular blog about how much he sucks. He falls in love with a bride on the day of her wedding to the perfect guy. I love that Ryan McPartlin is typecast as the perfect guy.
  2. The Decoy Bride – 2011 British Romantic Comedy rated PG: I am not ashamed to say I watched this movie solely because of David Tennant. It was great. He is great. It deserves the five-star rating it got on Netflix.
  3. Not Another Happy Ending – 2013 – PG 13 – Karen Gillan, is a cute, quirky and kind of crazy author with writer’s block who falls for another author and an editor – every book nerd’s dream.
  4. 13 going on 30 – 2004 PG 13 – Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo – A 13-year-old girl makes a wish on her 13th birthday and wakes up the next day as a 30-year-old woman.
  5. Must Love Dogs – 2005 – PG-13, John Cusack, Diane Lane – A forty-something preschool teacher who is reluctantly divorced is tricked into trying online dating.
  6. Leap Year – 2010 – PG – Amy Adams portrays a romantic woman who travels to Dublin, Ireland to propose marriage to her boyfriend on Leap Day, because, according to Irish tradition, a man who receives a marriage proposal on a leap day must accept it. Also loved her in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.
  7. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – 2011 – PG-13 – who doesn’t love Judy Dench? British retirees travel to India to retire to a newly “restored” hotel. It is less luxurious than advertised. Eventually the Marigold Hotel, and the people within it become their “home”.
  8. Elizabethtown – 2005 – PG-13 – Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst – on his way to a hometown memorial for his Kentucky-born father, a semi-suicidal “cityboy” discovers romance with a sweet southern stewardess while he learns more about family and himself.
  9. Take Me Home – 2011 – PG-13 – Amber Jaeger, Sam Jaeger – an illegal NYC taxi driver meets a woman who has a fear of flying and is hired to drive her to California after her estranged father suffers a heart attack.
  10. Spanglish –2004 – PG 13 – Adam Sandler, Tea Leoini, Paz Vega – a woman and her daughter emigrate from Mexico for a better life in America, where they start working for a family where the patriarch is a newly celebrated chef with an insecure wife. You have to watch this just to see Adam Sandler play such a sweet guy!
  11. The Switch – 2010 – PG 13 – Jennifer Anniston & Jason Bateman – you think it is just going to be a friend-zone movie, but there is more.
  12. Serendipity – 2001 – PG 13 – John Cusack – you know it is going to be a good Rom Com because it has John Cusack in it. Very cute.
  13. Kate & Leopold – 2001 – Romance with a Sci-fi twist when time travel brings together Meg Ryan & Hugh Jackman. Also Leiv Schreiber is a clumsy scientist.
  14. Maid in Manhattan – 2002 – PG 13 – Jennifer Lopez is endearing as beautiful but poor single mom who meets handsome rich guy.
  15. Beauty and the Briefcase – 2010 – TV 14 – Hillary Duff – I just think she is cute in this. Beauty & fashion magazine sends her undercover in an office to get a scoop. This is silly fluff movie that never goes too deep. Don’t expect anything but goofy fun from it.

Well there it is – I hope my “picks” help when you are in the mood for a romantic comedy.

Now I need some new suggestions, so leave me your favorite titles in the comment section, or feel free to let me know if you think my selections stink!
